Enabling verbose Device and Media debugging in SGMon will result in severely degraded throughput for tape backups.

Solution

Note: To check if this document describes the computer in question, download and run a health check with SymHelp.
Enabling SGMon verbose Device and Media debugging will severely degrade throughput to tape.

Checking the Verbose Device and Media debugging box within SGMon changes the default value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Backup Exec For Windows\Adamm DioLogAll from 0 to ffffffff.

The Backup Exec ADAMM Log will show the following:
=======================================
[1516] 08/12/09 07:00:06.074 Start Rsm Support:

[1516] 08/12/09 07:00:06.105 Device Discovery End:

[5128] 08/17/09 10:57:39.062 Verbose logging enabled: DioLogAll = 0x0001

[5128] 08/17/09 11:07:55.316 Verbose logging disabled

[5128] 08/18/09 10:44:27.697 Verbose logging enabled: DioLogAll = 0xffffffff
=======================================

Leaving this value enabled will severely degrade throughput for tape backups.

*Closing SGMon does not change the registry value back to 0.

Solution:
Uncheck the Device and Media Verbose debugging box in SGMon before closing the application to turn off verbose debugging in the registry.
