Problem

When a user deletes an archived item via the browser search or Archive Explorer the shortcut remains in the mailbox. Once the shortcut is deleted in Outlook the message will move into the Deleted Items folder. If the associated Enterprise Vault (EV) Exchange Policy is configured to 'Archive deleted items' (Exchange Policy => Advanced => Archiving General), when shortcut processing runs, the Archive Task will identify the moved item and will attempt to update the location, resulting in this message.  This can also occur if the shortcut was moved to a different folder in the mailbox.

Solution

Workaround 1:

Implement the HideMovedItemUpdateFailure registry value available from Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP2 to suppress the logging of these events. Set HideMovedItemUpdateFailure to 1 to suppress logging of Event ID 3378. If HideMovedItemUpdateFailure is not present, or is set to its default value of 0, these events are logged.
Note: This registry key should not be applied if the environment leverages custom EVPM Retention Folders, where a folder within the mailbox has a greater Retention period than the Default Retention period for the user. This registry value will hide all Move Item update failures and may mask a more serious concern.

1.  Go to Start | Run and type regedit and click OK.

2.  Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\KVS\Enterprise vault\Agents.

3.  Add a new DWORD value and name it HideMovedItemUpdateFailure.

4.  Give the entry a decimal value of 1.

Notes:  This item is an orphaned item and will be deleted on the 4th attempt once it has failed to update three times.

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

Workaround 2:

The below workaround may be utilized if the Event log warnings exclusively reference only the \Deleted Items location, and the environment does leverage unique Retention folders.
Disabling the archiving of deleted items in the EV Exchange Policy
1. Open the EV Vault Administration Console (VAC).
2. Expand to Policies | Exchange | Mailbox
3. Right click the appropriate assigned Exchange Policy | Properties.
4. Select the Advanced Tab.
5. Set the advanced setting 'Archive deleted items' to Off.
Once the Task synchronizes the Policy change to the mailboxes, the Mailbox Archiving Task will no longer archive or scan the \Deleted Items location, suppressing the Warning above.

Workaround 3:
Implement Orphaned Shortcut Deletion (See the Related Articles section for further details)
