Restore- \\SERVERNAME\Microsoft Information Store\RSG Writer Name: Exchange Server, Writer ID: {76FE1AC4-15F7-4BCD-987E-8E1ACB462FB7}, Last error: 0x800423f3, State: 0014.

A failure occurred querying the Writer status.


Solution



An Exchange 2007 database restore to a RSG may fail depending on how the selections were made in the restore job properties in Backup Exec. Listed below are the various conditions when the restore job may fail along with the workaround to be used.
 
 
A. For a Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) enabled backup set:
 
1.  When the Storage Group that was backed up contained more than one database.
 
If the restore selections were made by selecting the entire backup set from the left side and then deselecting the unwanted database(s) from the right hand side (Figure 1), then the job may fail with the error shown above

The Application Event Logs on the Exchange server report the following error:

Description:            
Exchange VSS Writer failed restoring a backup with error code -2147024809 when comparing restore targets for storage group 'RSG' with information in the Active Directory.
 
Workaround:
 
Select the required "database" and "logs" items from the right hand side after highlighting the backup set. (Figure 2)

2.  When the Storage Group that was backed up contained only one database.
 
Restores from backup sets that contained only one database completes successfully irrespective of how the selections are made in the restore job.
 
B. For a Non-GRT backup set:
 
1.  When the Storage Group that was backed up contained more than one database.
 
If the restore selections were made by selecting the individual "Database" and "Logs" items from the right hand side after highlighting the backup set on the left side (Figure 3) , then the job may fail with the error shown above

The Application Event Logs on the Exchange server report the following error:

Exchange VSS Writer failed restoring a backup with error code -2147221233 when saving the restore environment document 'C:\RSG\_restoredLogs\E00restore.env'.
 
Workaround:
Select the entire backup set from the left side and then deselect the unwanted database(s) from the right hand side. (Figure 4)

2.  When the Storage Group that was backed up contained only one database.
 
Restores from NON-GRT backup sets that contained only one database also reflects the same behavior as stated above under the section B.1. Please refer the workaround in that section to configure the restore job correctly.

The original GUID for the database is 'GUID-XXXXXXX', but the target GUID specified in the Restore Options string is 'GUID-ZZZZZZZZ', which does not exist in the Active Directory.
