Solution

Redirected restore of SQL to different database on same server or cluster from a non-snapshot backup fails with the above error. Restore of the database to a different SQL not on same server or cluster is successful.

Restore of a test database to its original location fails with error "V-79-65323-3101 - Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use".

Symptom: The restore shows byte count but the job rate goes down until the job fails. Also, the database is in restoring mode in the SQL management studio if user logs in and expands the database.

Edit the Restore job properties and under Settings- Microsoft SQL, select the options "Take existing database offline" and "Overwrite existing database"  and run the redirected restore.
