Issue

An Incremental or Differential backup of a Windows 2008 or Windows Vista Operating System fails with an error "0xe0008488 - Access is denied" during backup of $Extend directory.

Error

Access denied to directory $Extend\.
Directory \\SERVERNAME\C:\$Extend was not found, or could not be accessed.
None of the files or subdirectories contained within will be backed up.

Solution

An Incremental or a Differential backup of a Windows 2008 or Windows Vista operating system may fail with the above error when trying to backup the "$Extend" directory.

On Windows 2008/Windows Vista, the $Extend directory is used to store the Transactional NTFS related metadata. The $Extend directory is hidden and not accessible to a user. However Backup Exec tries to backup this directory and since it is not accessible the backup fails.

This error can be ignored. Restore operations from these backup sets will not be affected .
