Logon Failure error occurs when a non-administrator domain/local user tries to login to the Backup Exec console

Error

Logon Failure

Cause

This issue occurs because the Backup Exec SQL instance, by default, doesn't allow any non-administrative user to access it.

Solution

Give the domain/local user the "Sysadmin" role on to the Backup Exec's SQL Instance and also add it to the 'Backup operators' group on the Backup Exec Server/Active directory.

Steps: (Login to the Backup Exec Server with any Administrator account)

1.   Install the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express

2.   Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express.
      {Start-> programs-> Microsoft SQL Server 2005-> SQL Studio Express}

3.   Connect using SQL Studio Express to the Backup Exec SQL instance (Server Name\BKUPEXEC).

4.   Add the non-administrator user account with "Sysadmin" role to the BKUPEXEC instance's Security tab.

5.   Add the non-administrator user account to the Backup operators group on the Backup Exec server.

6. Login to the Backup Exec Server with the same non-administrator user account and launch the Backup Exec console.

Note:  Though the non-Administrative User may now be able to launch the console, this user may not be able to create or edit jobs if the Administrative Account listed at Network>Logon Accounts has a Type of "Restricted" (instead of Common).  Other operations, such as installing patches, repairing the installation, etc... may also fail if a user without full Administrative Rights is not logged on to the machine.
