Issue

A Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) enabled backup of a SharePoint database fails with the error "V-79-57344-33928 Access is Denied" in a Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) setup when the Content Database is hosted on a separate server from the Config Database inside the Microsoft##SSEE embedded SQL instance on the Sharepoint Server.

Error

Access denied to directory \.
Access is denied to Remote Agent. Check the login account for the specified device.
V-79-57344-33928 Access is Denied.

Cause

A Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) enabled backup of a SharePoint Farm/Database fails with the above mentioned error in the following scenario:

1. Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) setup
2. The Admin Content Database and the Config Database are hosted inside the Microsoft##SSEE embedded SQL instance on the server where WSS is installed.
3. The Content Databases for the other web applications are hosted on a different server running SQL.

It is observed that the GRT backup fails only for the Content Databases that are hosted on the remote SQL instance.  GRT backups of the SQL databases hosted in the Microsoft##SSEE instance complete successfully.

If the backup is run to disk, the following error is reported in the beremote debug log on the Backup Exec server:

If the backup is run to Tape, the following error is reported in the beremote debug log on the remote SQL server:

=======================================================================================

While running a GRT backup, an ODBC connection needs to be established to the Configuration DB hosted inside the Microsoft##SSEE embedded SQL instance from the SQL server hosting the Content databases. The above mentioned errors occur because "Remote Connections" is needed but cannot be enabled for the Microsoft##SSEE embedded SQL instance on the server where WSS is installed.

Backup Exec does not support GRT backups of SharePoint databases in a Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) setup that has been configured as described above.

Solution

Run a Non-GRT backup of the SharePoint Farm/Databases that are hosted on a SQL server remote to the Microsoft##SSEE instance on the Web Server. The entire Content DB will need to be restored to an alternate SharePoint farm to extract any individual documents/items from the DB.

OR

Ensure all SharePoint related databases are hosted on a SQL instance that allows remote connections.
