Issue



Slow backup throughput is observed while backing up the System State of a Windows 2008 or 2008 R2 Operating System. The behaviour is specific to the System State and other types of backups from the same system will operate at a normal speed.
 


Environment



  • This issue has been seen on 32bit and 64bit Window 2008 servers and 2008 R2.
  • This issue has been seen on local and remote System State backups of Windows 2008 and 2008 R2 servers.
  • This issue has been seen on Domain Controllers and Non Domain Controller servers.
  • This issue has been seen with Backup Exec 12.5, 2010 and 2010 R2.

Solution



 
This issue is now resolved with Backup Exec 2010 R3.  For more information on how to upgrade to Backup Exec 2010 R3, follow the link given below:
 
Additionally some further performance testing found an increase in performance after the following Microsoft patches were applied to 2008 and 2008 R2 servers.
 
A hotfix is available that improves TCP loopback latency and UDP latency in Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
 
 
You encounter a decrease in I/O performance under a heavy disk I/O load on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based or Windows 7-based computer.

Symantec Corporation has acknowledged that the above-mentioned issue is present in earlier versions of the product(s) cited at the end of this article. Symantec Corporation is committed to product quality and satisfied customers.
There are no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in earlier versions of the software at the present time.  However, the issue has been addressed in the revision of the product specified in this article.
