Problem
Is Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) compatible with GPT data partitions?
Solution
Symantec System Recovery (SSR) 2011, Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) 2010, 8.5, and 8.0 have limited support for GPT data partitions. Versions of BESR prior to version 8.0 do not support GPT. MBR (legacy BIOS mode) is fully supported. GPT Boot (uEFI enabled) is supported in BESR but only for non-bootable partition backup and restore only.
NOTE: Only 64-bit versions of Windows can take advantage of the features enabled by 64-bit uEFI firmware and booting from GPT disk. 32-bit versions of Windows do not support uEFI features, however ALL versions of Windows 2003 SP1 onwards can use GPT partitions for data.
NOTE: Testing for GPT data partitions (with restore to uEFI or MBR based systems) was done on Intel Xeon with OSs supporting GPT.
NOTE: BESR does not support Itanium based systems.
