Backups fail with error when the appropriate license key is not present for one or more job selections

Error

Final error: 0xe000fe3c - Before you can back up this resource, you must purchase and install a license key for the appropriate Backup Exec agent.

V-79-57344-65084

Cause

The appropriate license for a resource selected in the backup is not installed.  This can either be a missing Remote Agent license or a missing license for a database agent like Microsoft SQL or Microsoft Exchange.  The error may also be seen if there is a problem within Backup Exec with an installed license.

When the evaluation period for the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers has expired, a license is required for each Remote Agent being backed up from systems running Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista and Windows 7.  Only XP and Windows 2000 Professional boxes do not require a Remote Agent for Windows Servers Licensing key.

Another common reason for this error is if Backup Exec is run in evaluation mode and the entire media server is selected for backup.   Selecting the entire media server adds a selection for the Backup Exec SQL Instance.  When the evaluation period expires, a license for the Agent for Microsoft SQL Servers is required to backup any SQL instance.  That includes the Backup Exec SQL instance which is named BKUPEXEC by default.  When the backup runs, the error will be seen when Backup Exec attempts to backup the BKUPEXEC instance because no Agent for Microsoft SQL Servers is present.

Solution

First, check if all license keys are installed.

Go to Tools > Install Options and License keys on this Media Server

Then verify the appropriate license is installed.

If the appropriate license key is installed, verify the license shows in the license information window.

Go to Help > About Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers

Select the button "License Information"

Now verify the appropriate license for the agent is installed.

If the license does show up in the license key window, but not in the license information Window, the license was not properly installed.

Resolution 1:

To resolve this, uninstall and re-install the license key.

1. Go to Tools > Install Options and License keys on this Media Server
2. Select the key that is installed, but not showing inside the license information window.
3. Select the remove button.
4. Select Next > Next > Install
5. Go to Tools > Install Options and License keys on this Media Server
6. Add the license key then select Add
7. Select Next > Next > Install
8. Restart the services and attempt the backup again.

Resolution 2:

If Resolution 1 did not resolve the issue, then there is possibly another service such as an Anti-Virus that may be blocking the license from a proper installation.

1. Temporarily disable the suspected service.
2. Go to Tools > Install Options and License keys on this Media Server
3. Select the key that is installed, but not showing inside the license information window.
4. Select the remove button.
5. Select Next > Next > Install
6. Go to Tools > Install Options and License keys on this Media Server
7. Add the license key then select Add
8. Select Next > Next > Install
9. Restart the services and attempt the backup again.

Resolution 3:

If a backup job contains a selection for a remote agent or database agent which is not licensed and for which the evaluation period has expired, the remote server or database selection needs to be removed from the job.  This will allow the job to complete successfully and backup only those resources for which valid licenses are installed in Backup Exec:

1. Edit the backup selection list for the problem backup job by double-clicking on the selection list on the Job Setup tab
2. Click "Selections" under "Source" to go to the Selections page of the Selection List
3. Click the "View Selection Details" tab to view the text based selections
4. Highlight each line which contains a selection for a remote server or application data that requires an additional license that has not been purchased and installed in Backup Exec.  Then, click delete to remove each line.  To remove the Backup Exec SQL Instance from the selections, highlight the line which reads either "ServerName\BKUPEXEC\*.*"  or  "\BKUPEXEC\*.*" and click the Delete button
5. Click OK to save the selection list
6.  Run the backup again to confirm that is able to backup all remaining resources which are properly licensed.
