Issue

Virtual Machine is in the Fault Tolerance Mode when the Virtual Machine is backed up by AVVI and the backup fails with "Snapshot creation failed. This operation is not supported."

Error

VMware ESX backup fails with error " Vmware VCB framework reported the following error. Error: other error encountered: snapshot creation failed. This operation is not supported"

Solution

VCB operates on snapshots of virtual machines and Fault Tolerance (FT) does not work for virtual machines with snapshots, you cannot create a virtual machine in the FT mode while being backed up by VCB. FT disables snapshot operations for its virtual machines.

Workaround:

Install the Backup Exec agent inside the virtual machine and perform a physical machine backup.
