Snapshot provider error (0x173D): Backup is in progress. Please wait for backup completion before trying this operation again


Cause




When backing up a virtual machine or files that reside on a CSV, Backup Exec prepares the CSV for backup to avoid data corruption. During the preparation, the controlling node is moved and pinned to the cluster node on which the backup runs. The default amount of time to move the node is 2100 seconds (35 minutes). However, the process may take more than 35 minutes if the System Snapshot Provider is used and active backup jobs that target the same CSV are running on other cluster nodes. If the node cannot be moved within 35 minutes, then the job fails with the above error message.

Solution



Workaround(s):
 
  • Retry the job.
  • Schedule the backup jobs to run at different times.
  • Increase the amount of time that is available to move the node.
Note: To increase the amount of time that is available to move the node, change the Snapshot Timeout registry value on each cluster node. The maximum allowable timeout value is 14400 seconds (4 hours).  The Snapshot Timeout (DWORD) registry value is located under the following registry key:
 
Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
