Issue

Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) or Symantec System Recovery (SSR-2011) reverts to trial mode after successfully entering serial number

Cause

After installing Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery and successfully entering a serial number, the software will revert back to trial mode if the Management Control from the Backup Exec System Recovery Manager 8.x (BESRM) is installed. BESRM 8.x cannot manage BESR 2010 or SSR clients. When upgrading the client, the Management Control is not removed causing the issue. The correct license is removed when the Management Control publishes to the BESRM or when the BESR console is opened. In addition, if the machine is managed by the Symantec System Recovery Management Solution (SSRMS) the same issue will occur. Licensing is performed in the SSRMS console which provides the client machines a valid license when a policy is assigned.

Solution

In order to resolve the issue, the Management Control must be uninstalled  from Add / Remove Programs. A reboot is not necessary when uninstalling the Management Control. If using the SSRMS, then create a license policy and assign to the affected machines.
