Cleanup procedure for failed uninstall of Symantec VPN Client

Issue



You are having trouble uninstalling the Symantec VPN Client, and you want to manually remove it from your system, or a technician has advised you to manually remove the product.


Solution



To manually uninstall the Symantec VPN Client v8.0 or v9.0
  1. Navigate to and delete the Symantec\ClientVPN directory
  2. Make sure the following files are deleted from the \program files\Symantec\ClientVPN folder:
    • axntvpns.dll
    • emapi.dll
    • iphlpapi.dll
    • kmpapi32.dll
    • mfc42.dll
    • msvcrt.dll
    • nsldapsslv30.dll
    • psapi.dll
    • uninst.dll
  3. Use Regedt32 to remove all ClientVPN keys from the registry. Delete the following registry keys:

CAUTION:We recommend you make a back up of the registry before any changes are made. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Delete only the keys that are specified. See the document How to back up the Windows registry for instructions.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\ClientVPN
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{90F30BE0-7EA6-11D5-90C2-00E02910E0E6}
  • On computers using Windows 2000/XP, delete the following keys:
    • HKEY_LOCAL\MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\axtvpn
    • HKEY_LOCAL\MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Symantec Client VPN
    • HKEY_LOCAL\MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\AXT_VPNA
    • HKEY_LOCAL\MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SYMANTEC_CLIENT_VPN

      You must first change the permissions for the last two keys to Full Control for everyone in order to delete them. For instructions to change permissions for Registry keys, please consult your Windows documentation
The manual removal of the Symantec VPN Client v8.0 or v9.0 is complete.

Note: These instructions do not provide a full procedural removal of the Symantec VPN Client. These steps are intended to supplement a previous uninstall process of the client. This process is to remove files and the registry entries that may remain and affect workstation performance or future product installations.

To manually uninstall the Symantec Enterprise VPN Client v7.x

  1. Navigate to and delete the RaptorMobile\SEVPN Client folder.
  2. Make sure the following files are deleted from the \program files\symantec\VPNClient folder:
    • axntvpns.dll
    • emapi.dll
    • iphlpapi.dll
    • kmpapi32.dll
    • mfc42.dll
    • msvcrt.dll
    • nsldapsslv30.dll
    • psapi.dll
    • uninst.dll
  3. Use Regedt32 to remove all RaptorMobile keys from the registry (they may be under AXENT or Symantec). Delete the following registry keys:

    CAUTION: We recommend you make a back up of the registry before any changes are made. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Delete only the keys that are specified. See the document How to back up the Windows registry for instructions.

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\AXENT\Raptor Mobile
    • For the VPN 7.0 Client only, delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\VPNClient
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{90F30BE0-7EA6-11D5-90C2-00E02910E0E6}
    • On computers using Windows 98, delete the following keys:
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Net\000n where n is the number of the key that contains the string value DeviceVxDs="axtfuse.sys"
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ENUM\Root\Net\00n where n is the number of the key that contains the string value DeviceDesc="Symantec Enterprise VPN Client Driver"
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\Symantec Enterprise VPN Client
    • On computers using Windows NT 4, delete the following keys:
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlset\services\VPN
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Current\Controlset\services\VPNn where n is the number of the virtual adapter.
        To find the number of virtual adapters:
        1. On your desktop, Right-clicking on Network Neighborhood and click Properties.
        2. On the Adapters tab, in the list of Network Adapters, find the Symantec Enterprise VPN Client Virtual Adapter and the associated number.
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RaptorMobile

        For VPN 7.0 Client only -HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Symantec Enterprise VPN Client
    • On computers using Windows 2000/XP, delete the following keys:
      • HKEY_LOCAL\MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\axtvpn
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RaptorMobile

        For VPN 7.0 Client only - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Symantec Enterprise VPN Client
