Issue

You installed a Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange product on a server. The process Savfmsectrl.exe slowly increases in memory usage until the server halts or you restart the Symantec Mail Security service.

One of the following versions is installed:
-Symantec Mail Security 4.6.x for Microsoft Exchange
-Symantec Mail Security 4.5.x for Microsoft Exchange
-Symantec Mail Security 4.0.x for Microsoft Exchange

Solution

This problem was fixed by installing Service Pack 4 or editing the registry. The fix to use depends on the version of Windows server installed.

Windows 2000 Server versions
Install Service Pack 4 for Symantec Mail Security 4.0 for Microsoft Exchange. Go to the Microsoft page Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 for details and links to download.

For Symantec Mail Security 4.5.x and newer Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 is a system requirement. When installing Symantec Mail Security 4.6 for Microsoft Exchange, install build 107 or newer.

Windows Server 2003
When Symantec Mail Security is installed on a Windows 2003 Server, use the steps found in Technical Information. When installing Symantec Mail Security 4.6 for Microsoft Exchange, install build 107 or newer.
