Removing Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 4.x when Add/Remove Programs does not work

Symantec recommends uninstalling Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 4.x through Add/Remove programs or the Start menu. In the event of an incomplete installation, or the Add/Remove programs does not work, it may be necessary to manually uninstall the Symantec product.


Symptoms
Removing Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 4.x when Add/Remove Programs does not work Symantec recommends uninstalling Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 4.x through Add/Remove programs or the Start menu. In the event of an incomplete installation, or the Add/Remove programs does not work, it may be necessary to manually uninstall the Symantec product.



Solution




Before you begin:
  • The instructions in this document are only for Windows NT/2000 computers.
  • If you intend to reinstall the Symantec product at a future time and want to copy of the current settings, save the SMSSMTP.CFG. Copy to a safe location.



To stop the SMSSMTP service
  1. Click Start > Run
  2. In the Open: box type: services.msc and then click OK.
  3. In the right pane, right-click Symantec Mail Security for SMTP service and click Stop.

    Note: If this step produces an error message, please ignore the message and proceed with the rest of the steps.

To edit the registry

WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up your system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to your registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. See Backing up the Windows registry before proceeding.

  1. Exit all open programs.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type the following

    regedit
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Registry Editor, go to the following key:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec
      In the right pane, right-click SMSSMTP, and then click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\InstalledApps
      In the right pane, right-click SMSSMTP, and then click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\App Paths
      In the left pane, right-click SMSSMTP.exe, and then click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Uninstall
      In the left pane, right-click Symantec Mail Security for SMTP, and then click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
      In the left pane, right-click SMSSMTP, and then click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Application
      In the left pane, right-click Symantec Mail Security for SMTP, and then click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  6. Exit the Registry Editor.
To remove Symantec Mail Security 4.x for SMTP
  1. Open Windows Explorer, go to the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\Symantec
  2. Delete the SMSSMTP folder.

To remove Symantec Mail Security 4.x for SMTP from the Start Menu/Desktop
  1. Right-click Start, and then click Open All Users.
  2. Double-click Programs.
  3. Delete the Symantec Mail Security for SMTP menu Item.
  4. Delete the Symantec Mail Security for SMTP desktop shortcut.


To remove Java LiveUpdate
  1. Open Windows Explorer, go to the directory:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
  2. Delete the Java LiveUpdate folder.
  3. Navigate to the following directory:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
  4. Delete the Java LiveUpdate folder.


To edit the registry and remove Java LiveUpdate

  1. Exit all open programs.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type the following:

    regedit
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Registry Editor, open go to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Uninstall
  6. In the left pane, select the following value.

    Java LiveUpdate
  7. Press Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  8. Exit the Registry Editor.

Note: You must restart the computer before reinstalling, or the service will not be recreated properly.
