Removing Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine 4.x when Add/Remove programs does not work

Symantec recommends uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine 4.x through Add/Remove programs or the Start menu.



When Add/Remove does not work, the following section provides steps on manually removing the Symantec product.

To remove Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine manually on Windows based computers

  1. On the Windows taskbar click Start > Program > Administrative Tools > Services.
  2. In the right pane, right-click Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine service > Stop.


WARNING: In the next steps you will edit the Windows registry. We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before you make any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the registry keys that are specified. See How to back up the Windows registry for instructions.

To edit the registry and remove the Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine keys

  1. Exit all programs.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type the following:

  5. Navigate to the following registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\Software\Symantec\InstalledApps\CarrierScan Server
    HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\InstallShield Uninstall Information\{D2F16FFD-5696-4954-9C37-90ECF06BAE3C}

  6. Click each registry key above and then press Delete.
  7. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  8. Exit the Registry Editor.

To remove Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine files and folders

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start >
  2. Navigate to the following locations, right-click each, and then click Delete.
    <Drive>\Program Files\Symantec\Scan Engine
    <Drive>\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Licenses -- Only delete if no other Symantec program installed.
    <Drive>\Program Files\Common Files\Virus Defs -- Only delete the Virus Defs folder if no other Symantec program installed.
