Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine produces definition-related error messages and does not start

Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine fails to start. In the Windows event viewer, you see an error message that says that the definitions failed to load.
This problem can occur if the Usage.dat file was not able to update for the last definition set.
To resolve the problem, update the Usage.dat file entry for Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine so that it points to the most recent definition set.
The Usage.dat file is in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\virusdefs directory. Use a text editor, such as Notepad, to edit the Usage.dat file. Do not use a word processor, such as Word. Word processors may change the file format and render the file unusable.
The Usage.dat file is formatted as follows:
Where <YYYY> is the four-digit year, <MM> is the two digit month, <DD> is the two-digit day, <REV> is the definition revision and <Product code> is the product code. See the example Usage.dat files in the Technical References section of this page.

If either of the product codes are under an old set of definitions that no longer exists, move the product codes to the section under the most current definitions. After you move the product codes, restart the Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine service.
