Issue

You installed Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam or Symantec Mail Security 8200/8300. When you log on to the Brightmail Control Center (BCC) the Summary window or Status window shows outdated data or does not update. If you restart the Brightmail service or Tomcat service, the BCC updates correctly.

Solution

This problem is known to occur when statistics and log data exceed a scalability limit for the Symantec product. The Tomcat service and Brightmail Agent service cannot keep up with the amount of statistics and data that is returned from each scanner.

To ensure optimum performance of your Symantec Brightmail installation, please work through the following sections.

To disable Quarantine thresholds
  1. Log on to the BCC as an administrator.
  2. On the menu bar, click Settings.
  3. In the left pane, under System Settings, click Quarantine.
  4. In the right pane, under Quarantine Thresholds, uncheck the boxes:
    Maximum size of quarantine database
    Maximum size per user
    Maximum number of messages
Maximum number of messages per user
  5. Click Save.

To configure LDAP when quarantine used
  1. Log on to the BCC as an administrator.
  2. On the menu bar, click Settings.
  3. In the left pane, under System Settings, click LDAP.
  4. In the right pane, under LDAP, type in the data that is needed to set up LDAP server.
  5. Click Save.

Note: Symantec does not recommend using Quarantine if you do not have LDAP Authentication configured.

To disable extended statistics for Reports
  1. Log on to the BCC as an administrator.
  2. On the menu bar, click Settings.
  3. In the left pane, under System Settings, click Reports.
  4. In the right pane, under Report Data Storage, use the least amount of time to keep reported data.
  5. Under Report Data Storage, only check boxes needed. The possible selections are:
    Sender domains
    Senders
    Sender HELO domains
    Sender IP connections
    Recipient domains
    Recipients

Keep the number of check boxes to a minimum to decrease the volume of statistics kept.
  6. Click Save.

To set log settings to warning
  1. Log on to the BCC as an administrator.
  2. On the menu bar, click Settings.
  3. In the left pane, under System Settings, click Logs.
  4. In the right pane, under Log Level, select Warnings from the drop-downs for:
    Server
    Client
    Conduit
    Harvester
    Antivirus Cleaner

You may need to set the Log Level higher for troubleshooting, but you should return it to a warning level as soon as possible.
  5. Under Log Storage Limits, set the size and time to minimum possible.
  6. Click Save.

To remove mc_stats.*.xml files from each scanner
  1. Open a file manager.
  2. Go to the appropriate directory depending on your operating system
    Linux or Solaris
    /opt/LOADPOINT/stats/

    Windows
    C:\Program Files\Symantec\SBAS\Scanner\Stats
  3. If you count more than 20 mc_stats.*.xml files, delete all files.
If the count is 20 files proceed to next step.
  4. Restart the Brightmail Service for the scanner.
This step is necessary to help the Tomcat service to have a clean start. Stats data that was collected previously may be lost.

Note: You cannot remove mc_stats.*.xml files on a Symantec Mail Security appliance. Removal of mc_stats.*.xml files can only be removed on software installations of Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam 6.0.x or later.
