Issue

You installed a Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series appliance in your network. The db-backup script fails even though more than 50% disk space is available on the /data partition. The failure results in an error message. The text of the error message is "There is not enough drive space available to perform the backup"

Solution

To prevent this error you need to free additional space on the drive where the data partition is located. To create additional space on the data partition use the following sections.

To locate and delete core files from a command line

  1. Open a command line.
  2. At the prompt type a command and then press Enter.
    crawler
    deleter -list
    deleter -all

To reduce the size of your backup file, you can delete old or no longer needed files such as:

  • Old logs
  • Statistic files
  • Quarantined files

To delete logs from the Control Center

  1. Open the Control Center.
  2. Click Status> Logs.
  3. In the right pane in the View Logs window, click Clear All Scanner Logs.

To delete old report data for software version 7.6

  1. Open the Control Center.
  2. Click Administration> Reports.
  3. In the right pane in the Report Settings window, click Delete Data Now.

To delete old report data for software version 7.5

  1. Open the Control Center.
  2. Click Administration> Reports.
  3. In the right pane in the Report Settings window, click Clear All.

To delete old report data for software version 5.0

  1. Open the Control Center.
  2. Click Settings> Report Settings.
  3. In the right pane in the Report Settings window, click Clear All.

To delete quarantined messages for software version 7.5 and later

  1. Open the Control Center.
  2. Click Spam> Email Spam.
  3. In the left pane in the Message Quarantine window, click Delete All.

To delete quarantined messages for software version 5.0.x-x and earlier

  1. Open the Control Center.
  2. Click Quarantine.
  3. In the left pane in the Message Quarantine window, click Delete All.

Technical Information
The Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series Implementation Guide contains an incorrect statement about the db-backup script. The incorrect statement is: “The db-backup script checks the available disk space on the /data partition and exits if less than 50% of the partition space is available.

In reality, the db-backup script calculates the amount of disk space the backup file requires. The script then checks to make sure that twice this amount is available on the /data partition. This space is used to write temporary files, and create a compressed package. After the creation of the compressed package the temporary files are deleted.
