Exchange mail flow is slow and you notice many instances of SAVFMSESP.EXE (especially on computers with hyperthreaded CPUs)

Problem
You have an Exchange server with multiple processors that utilize Hyperthreading or Dual-Core technology. You install Symantec Mail Security for Exchange (SMSMSE) and notice a large number of occurences of SAVFMSESP.EXE in the list. The large number of processes are causing system performance degradation. Mail flow may be slow.
Environment
- Computer hardware either has hyperthreading CPUs or has more than eight physical CPUs
Cause
SMSMSE queries the operating system to determine the number of processors installed on the computer. With Intel's Hyperthreading and Dual-Core technology the operating system enumerates the virtual processors as well. This will cause Mail Security to use an artificially inflated number when calculating the number of threads it should use for scanning email.
Solution
See the following article on the correct calculation for scan threads and scan processes: Calculating the number of scan processes and scan threads for Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE).
