Error: "Cannot save the LDAP source" when you add an LDAP source to Symantec Mail Security 5 for SMTP

Issue



You installed Symantec Mail Security 5 for SMTP (SMS-SMTP) on a server. When you attempt to add a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) source an error shows. The error text reads "Cannot save the LDAP source" The SMS Sync Server service also does stops. The service may start and then quickly stop.


 


Solution



Please refer to the platform specific instructions below to address this issue: 

For Windows installations of SMS-SMTP:

  1. Stop the following services through Administrative Tools Services:
    SMS Sync Server
    SMS Active Directory Notification Agent
    SMS Exchange 5.5 Notification Agent
    SMS IPlanet Notification Agent
    SMS Virtual Directory Server
     
  2. Go to the Data directory and delete the contents.
    The default installation location for the Data folder is:
    C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSSMTP\ldapsync\enquire\DATA
  1. Go to the ldapsync folder and edit the Enquire.config file.
    Locate the "suffix_list" value in the [installation] section.  Change the value to look like the following: suffix_list:""
    Save and close the Enquire.conf file.
    The default installation location for the file is
    C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSSMTP\ldapsync\enquire\config
     
  2. Test enQuire config
    Open a command prompt, type the following command and then press Enter.
    C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSSMTP\ldapsync\enquire\Enquire.exe -v  "C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSSMTP\ldapsync\enquire\config"

    You should receive a message like the following:
    enQuire License checked out successfully
    Starting Identity Server.
    enQuire Identity Server Version 3.7
    The service is not installed

    If an error is shows describing a missing dll, type the following command:
    set PATH=%PATH%;C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSSMTP\ldapsync\enquire\
    Run Enquire.exe command again.
     
  3. if running the Enquire command is successful, stop the program by pressing CTRL+C.
     
  4. Start the following services through Administrative Tools Services:    
    SMS Sync Server
     
  5. Open the Symantec Mail Security SMTP 5.0 Control Center.
    In the left pane click Settings > Control Center and click the Save button.

 


For Linux installations of SMS-SMTP:

  1. Stop the following services:
    /etc/init.d/sms_ldapsync stop
     
  2. Go to the Data directory and delete the contents.
    The default installation location for the Data folder is:
    /opt/Symantec/SMSSMTP/ldapsync/enquire/DATA
     
  1. Go to the ldapsync folder and edit the Enquire.config file.
    Locate the "suffix_list" value in the [installation] section. Change the value to look like the following: suffix_list:""
    Save and close the Enquire.conf file.
    The default installation location for the file is:
    /opt/Symantec/SMSSMTP/ldapsync/enquire/config

     
  2. Test enQuire config
    From a shell prompt, type the following command and the press Enter.
    /opt/Symantec/SMSSMTP/ldapsync/enquire/Enquire -v /opt/Symantec/SMSSMTP/ldapsync/enquire/config

    You should receive a message like the following:
    enQuire License checked out successfully

    If you get an error describing an error loading a shared library, type the following command:
    if [ -z $LD_LIBRARY_PATH ] ; then export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/Symantec/SMSSMTP/ldapsync/enquire/; else export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}:/opt/Symantec/SMSSMTP/ldapsync/enquire/; fi
    Run the Enquire command again.
     
  3. if running the Enquire command is successful, stop the program by pressing CTRL+C.
     
  4. Start the following services:
    /etc/init.d/sms_ldapsync start
     
  5. Open the Symantec Mail Security SMTP 5.0 Control Center.
    In the left pane click Settings > Control Center and click the Save button.



You should now be able to add the LDAP source to Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 5.0.
