Technical Solution

You receive an alert notification from the Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series appliance. The alert notification text is: "Available Quarantine Disk Space is Low" The available disk space on the appliance is not low. You want to know why this alert notification is sent and how to stop it.

This alert can occur when the values for two settings for the appliance are too close together. To modify or configure the settings open the Control Center. The two settings:
  • Available disk space is less than
  • Maximum size of quarantine

You need to change the settings so the difference between the two settings is larger. For an example go to the Technical Information section.

To modify the Alert setting: "Available disk space is less than"
  1. In the Control Center, click Settings > Alert Settings.
  2. In the right pane, under Alert Conditions, change the value for "Available disk space is less than"
Use the boxes and drop-down lists to specify the alert conditions.
  3. Click Save.

To modify the Quarantine Settings
  1. In the Control Center, click Settings > Quarantine Settings.
  2. Under Quarantine Thresholds, for each type of threshold you want to configure, select the check box and enter the size or message threshold. You can configure multiple thresholds.
  3. Click Save.

No alert or notification occurs if Quarantine thresholds are exceeded. However, you can be alerted when disk space is low, when there is a large number of messages in the Quarantine database.

Technical Information
To better understand how this alert notification triggers consider the following example. The "Available disk space is less than" is set to 3 GB. The "Maximum size of quarantine database" is set to 4 GB. Assume quarantine grows to 1-GB plus. The alert triggers due to the difference between the alert setting and the maximum quarantine setting. When you subtract the 1 GB plus from the configured maximum size of 4 GB the result is less than 3 GB.
