When you send an email with a .hqx attachment or any other file from a Macintosh, Symantec Mail Security for Domino quarantines the attachment with the following message:

The attachment Screenshot.jpg(_rsc_ATTEKXDL.rsc) contained the security risk (Unable to extract content)

The Binhex file has a resource fork that is causing the issue

Per IBM's documentation, you will need to configure the Notes clients to send Windows Friendly attachments. This can be done on Lotus Notes 6.5.5 or later on the Macintosh.

This can be done on a case-by-case basis by checking the 'Send Windows Friendly Attachments' box in the file selection window or it can be done by editing a settings file.

To enable this feature:
You can activate this feature by adding the new Notes Preferences (the Macintosh equivalent of notes.ini) parameter "pcfriendly_attachments=1" which will send "Windows-friendly" attachments. Once this parameter is added, Windows-friendly attachments will be sent by default (including through drag-and-drop). Adding this parameter is different in 6.x and 7.x.

In 7.x:

    1. Open the Notes Preferences file in TextEdit, or any other text editor.
    2. Add the parameter to the end of the file, as you would on a Win32 system.
    3. Be sure to leave a blank line at the end of the text file.

In 6.x:

    1. Use the Notes Preferences Editor to edit the Notes Preferences file.
    2. Choose Item -> Add.
    3. "Name:" should be "pcfriendly_attachments".
    4. "Value:" should be "1".

You can add the parameter dynamically in 6.x by doing the following:

    1. Create a new memo and click in the body field.
    2. Choose File -> Attach.
    3. Check the box "Create Windows-friendly attachment".
    4. Choose a file to attach, and click "Create".

This adds the setting to the Notes Preferences file and will behave exactly as if you had added the parameter manually. You can discard the memo that results from this process. This process does not add the Notes Preferences parameter in 7.x.

Technical Information
hqx files are frequently unscannable on windows based systems because of the missing resource file. Often these files are also unaccessable once on a windows machine regardless of Symantec mail security.
