Issue

You plan to migrate your Symantec Mail Security appliance or Symantec Brightmail Gateway to its latest release and you want to know how.

Solution

Symantec recommends you update the version using either a keyboard/monitor or an SSH session so you can see the progress on the screen.

Use the following steps and sections in the order presented.

  1. Make sure you have at least the appliance build version 4.1.3-7 installed.
  2. Make sure you upgrade all the appliance scanners then the control center. (If you have the scanner and the control center on the same appliance you can ignore this).
  3. Backup your settings.

To backup a Symantec Mail Security Appliance or a Symantec Brightmail Gateway using a keyboard and a monitor

  1. Connect a monitor and keyboard to the appliance.
  2. Login to the appliance as admin
  3. Open a command line and type:
    db-backup

This command stores a backup copy of the database on the appliance.

To backup Symantec Mail Security Appliance or Symantec Brightmail Gateway using the Control Center

  1. In the Control Center, click Administration -> Backup.
  2. Click on the Administration tab
  3. Click Backup Now
You will have the option to store the backup on the appliance and also remotely using FTP, this provides an additional backup copy if you need to restore the Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series appliance from the restore CD.

NOTE: For versions later than 7.5 this option is located under Administration -> Version -> Backup

To backup Symantec Mail Security Appliance or Symantec Brightmail Gateway using an SSH connection

  1. Login to the appliance using its IP address and port 22.
Use an SSH application like Putty.

  2. Login to the appliance as admin.
  3. Open a command line and type:
    db-backup

This command stores a backup copy of the database on the appliance.

To stop mail flow to the scanner and allow the queues to empty

  1. Login to the appliance as admin using either a keyboard/monitor or an SSH session.

  2. For versions lower than 5.0:
Type each of the following commands and press Enter.
    mta-control inbound suspend-accept
    mta-control outbound suspend-accept

    For version 5.0 and 8.0:
    pause-mode reject

    For version 9.0 and later:
    mta-control pause-mode pause-accept

Wait until inbound and outbound queues empty. You can force the queues to flush by running mta-control all flush and also check its status using mta-stats

NOTE: On Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0 the command mta-stats was replaced by monitor mta.

To stop the Control Center service

  1. Login to the appliance as admin using either a keyboard/monitor or an SSH session.
  2. If you are using a version lower than 5.0 , at the command line type:
    service bcc stop
    For version 5.0 and later:
    service controlcenter stop

To update the version

  1. Login to the appliance as admin using either a keyboard/monitor or an SSH session.
  2. At the command line type:
    update install

This is going to install the latest available version.
If needed you can only download the update files and install then later, to do it you must type update download and then use update install later to actually install the update itself.

  3. Once the update is successfully installed the appliance will reboot automatically.
  4. When the appliance is functional login to the cli with the admin account and run pause-mode normal this should make the appliance ready to accept new messages. For Symantec Brightmail Gateway version 9.0, you should run mta-control pause-mode resume-accept.
  5. Test the appliance and make sure everything works correctly.

NOTE: You must upgrade to SBG version 8.0.3 first. Only then you can Upgrade to version 9.0.
