Problem

Multiple errors may occur after a failed upgrade or reboot of the appliance before an upgrade of a Symantec Mail Security 8200 series or 8300 series Appliance completes. The same errors may also occur when usage of the /data partition of the Appliance reaches 100% of capacity.

Symptoms
One or more of the following errors occur in the BrightmailLog.log file:

  • "init_modules: error while calling init function for module libipfreq."
  • "IP Freq module: failed to ensure creation of the sender reputation DB."
  • "IP Freq module: DB open failed: broken database file."

Solution

To resolve occurrences for Appliance build 5.0.0-33 or earlier:

  1. Backup the MySQL database of the Appliance.
  2. At the command line interface (CLI) of the Appliance, type:
    clear all
  3. Download the ISO image for Appliance software version 5.0.0-36 or later, burn the ISO to CD-ROM, and reinstall the operating system of the Appliance.
  4. Restore the backup of the MySQL database.

To resolve occurrences for Appliance build 5.0.0-36 or later:

  1. At the CLI, determine the amount of free space on the /data partition by typing: system-stats
  2. If the available hard drive space seems low, type:
    crawler
  3. If the available hard drive space seems low, type:
    deleter -all
  4. At the CLI of Appliance scanner version 5.0.0-36 or later, type:
    clear ipfreq.db
