Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 5 Error: "Can not release message from quarantine. Message has already been released or could not establish connection with the smtp host" appears when trying to release a quarantined item.

Issue



When trying to release an item from quarantine, the software reports that there is an error and that it can not release the item from quarantine because it has either been released or a connection with the smtp host can not be established.

Symptoms
Messages can not release from quarantine.

MySQL check reveals no damage done to the MySQL tables.

 


Error



 "Can not release message from quarantine. Message has already been released or could not establish connection with the smtp host"


Cause



This is primarily caused by a lack of DNS resolution to the SMTP host machine. When an item is released from quarantine it will follow the non-local relay settings which are typically set to 'Use MX Lookup"


Solution



Create an internal MX record for your domain that points to the Symantec Mail Security SMTP 5 system itself. Alternatively, set the Control Center to send notifications to a particular host by IP address.


To point the Control Center to a downstream server by IP address

  1. In the Control Center, click Settings > Control Center.
  2. On Control Center Settings, click Define new host.
  3. In the Host field, specify the IP address or fully qualified domain name of an SMTP host running a working MTA.

    Change this information from the default if the Control Center does not specify a working Scanner.
     
  4. Specify the port to use for SMTP. The default is 25.
  5. Click Save to store the current settings.
