How to perform a Restore Anyware of a Windows 2003 Domain Controller when it is the only Domain Controller in the domain

Solution

To prepare for disaster recovery, the following information will be required in order to restore correctly.

  • Boot and System partition locations and drive letters
  • Active Partition location
  • Drive location of the Active Directory database

The following steps are to restore a Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller that either has a single disk or active directory is located on the system drive.

Backup Exec System Recovery 7.0.x / 8.0.x

1. Boot the server from the Symantec Recovery Disk (SRD) and ensure Networking Services has been started.

2. Select "Map a network drive" if the backup images are located on a network share.

3. Click on "Recover My Computer" and hit next on the following screen.

4. Select the image file by filename and hit Next.

Note: Restore of the operating system partition (usually C:) needs to be performed first.

5. Ensure the following options are selected:

  • Restore Anyware
  • Set drive active for booting OS, only if the system partition is the active partition. By default, the system partition is marked as active if no other drive is marked as active
  • Restore MBR
  • Resize Disk
*To be used if disk failure has occurred and the disk has been replaced. This will allow for the restore to extend the partition to the end of the drive or to a specified size.

Note: For Backup Exec System Recovery 7 or 8, Do not select "Preserve Domain Trust Token" or "Restore Original Disk Signature" when restoring the System parition.

6. After the options are selected, hit Next

7. The option to reboot after restore should be enabled before starting the job. If multiple hard disk images need to be restored, DO NOT select reboot after restore.
