Backup Exec 12.0 and 12.5 - Catalog Dump (CATDUMP) Utility


Symantec Backup Exec (tm) 12.0 and 12.5 for Windows Servers now has a utility to export the contents of the Backup Exec Catalog file to a text file.

To use this utility:
1. Backup Exec 12.0 or 12.5 for Windows Servers must be installed*
2. CatDump.exe must be copied to the directory where Backup Exec is installed (Default C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec).

*Note: Even though Backup Exec 12.0 or 12.5 for Windows Servers is required to run this utility, catalogs from any previous version of Backup Exec can be exported.

Usage: CatDump filename [Parameters]
Optional parameters are defined as follows:
Parameters have the format "KEYWORD=VALUE"
Abbreviations: KEYWORDS can be abbreviated by the minimum number of
characters needed to identity them (e.g. T for TABDELIM)

SETNUM=number (only used with family GUID) DEFAULT:-1 (all sets)
HEADERS=Y|N|O or 1|0|O (include set header information, O=header only) - DEFAULT:Y
WAIT=Y|N or 1|0 (wait for key press to terminate) - DEFAULT:N

Status: (first character)
S - File was split by end of media.
C - File was continued from previous media.
X - File image on media is corrupt.

Catalog directory: C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalogs
Catalog file: {A018199C-8617-11D1-ABBE-0000-F832B476}.fh
Desired Output File: C:\Catalog.txt

The command would be:
catdump "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalogs\{A018199C-8617-11D1-ABBE-0000-F832B476}.fh" > C:\Catalog.txt
The console may go into a non-responsive state while generating the text file. Process is complete when the C: prompt returns.
