Cause

When the CAS and MMS servers are in two different domains and the Backup Exec Service account for the MMS fails to authenticate with the SQL instance on the CAS server, it fails with the error message 0xe0008144

This happens if the Backup Exec Service account used on MMS does not have sufficient privileges on SQL instance on CAS server.

Solution

1) Open SQL Server Surface Area Configuration on CAS server.

2) Click on Add New Administrator

3) Type the Backup Exec Service account for MMS server as domain\administrator

4) Add the SysAdmin Role :

5) Click OK

6) Start Device and Media service on MMS server.
