Duplication jobs failing with status 85 (resulting to end status 191).

Error

13:48:33.885 [6268.6272] <2> bpduplicate: Received read status: 0, 85, 0, 0, 0 (in admin log on the Master Server)

Solution

A. Following events will appear in admin log on the Master Server:

13:48:33.885 [6268.6272] <2> dupreadline: read: EXIT STATUS 85
13:48:33.885 [6268.6272] <2> bpduplicate: Received read status: 0, 85, 0, 0, 0
13:48:33.885 [6268.6272] <2> bpduplicate: bpduplicate sent EXIT STATUS acknowledgement, status: 0, err: 0
13:48:34.197 [6268.6272] <2> dupreadline: read: EXIT STATUS 82
13:48:34.197 [6268.6272] <2> bpduplicate: Received write status: 0, 82
13:48:34.197 [6268.6272] <2> bpduplicate: bpduplicate sent EXIT STATUS acknowledgement, status: 0, err: 0
13:48:34.197 [6268.6272] <2> set_job_details: Sending Tfile jobid (82793)
13:48:34.197 [6268.6272] <2> set_job_details: LOG 1241581714 16 bpduplicate 6268 host sydap01 backup id sydfp02_1240972891 read failed, media read error (85).

B. bpdm log on the read media server will show the following events:

13:48:30.208 [2224.1248] <16> sydap01: STSImageManager: read() failed on image file J:\Netbackup DiskStaging\sydfp02_1240972891_C1_F58.1240972891.img (error=1450, Unknown error)

13:48:30.724 [2224.1248] <2> set_job_details: LOG 1241581710 32 bpdm 2224 sts_read_image failed: error 2060017 system call failed

13:48:32.536 [2224.1248] <2> set_job_details: LOG 1241581712 16 bpdm 2224 cannot read image from disk, Invalid argument

Conclusion and solution:
The above was an issue for larger duplication jobs where the read media server was using paged kernel memory higher than the default on Windows 2003 servers, and was resulting in the paged memory pool exhaustion. The solution was to extend the paged pool memory size beyond the amount required for the larger duplications using the following Microsoft article for Windows 2003:
