Problem
The Backup Exec Command Line Applet (BEMCMD) will not change a BackupToDisk Device setting to 'Auto detect'.
Solution
The Backup Exec Command Line Applet (BEMCMD) will not
change a BackupToDisk Device setting to 'Auto Detect' using the '-e0'
switch.
How to create or modify Backup-to-disk folders using BEMCMD is documented more in the Backup Exec Command Line Applet Guide. See Related Documents.
Using the BEMCMD -o119 parameter, it is possible to modify Backup-to-disk folders and their settings. The -e switch for these parameters configures the Device Settings to Auto Detect or Buffered Read and\or Buffered Writes.

Set backup-to-disk folder properties -o119
<switches> -f<folder name>
(Switches: -s<max b2d file size> -q<max number of backup sets> -k<reserve disk space> -e<device settings> -m<number of concurrent ops> )
( -e switch options: 0 = Auto Detect settings. Backup Exec decides; 1 = Buffered Reads; 2 = Buffered Writes. 1 & 2 allow use of large data blocks)
If an existing Backup-to-disk folder is modified via BEMCMD, it is not possible to set the 'Auto Detect' Device settings using the -e0 switch. The BEMCMD result will be successful, but the folder settings will not be changed. The Backup Exec console (GUI) will confirm this in the Properties of the Backup-to-disk folder.
Resolution:
For Backup Exec for Windows 12.5;
To change to the 'Auto detect' Device setting, when using Backup Exec for Windows 12.5, please either;
1) Use the Bemcmd '-e4' switch to enable the 'Auto Detect', instead of the -e0 switch.
Example: bemcmd -o119 -e4 <switches> -f<folder name>
2) Change the Backup-to-Disk folder Properties, in the Advanced tab of the Backup-to-disk folder Devices Properties, from the Devices tab of the Backup Exec console (GUI), as shown below.
For Backup Exec 2010;
This has been resolved in Backup Exec 2010 for Windows Servers revision 2896 Hotfix 344584. You can download the patch from here: http://support.veritas.com/docs/344584
