Issue

Why won't mail deliver properly when my MTAs are up and running correctly?

Symptoms
Symantec Brightmail Gateway Appliance, Symantec Brightmail Antispam 6.x., or Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 5 does not deliver email messages to the downstream mail server

    • Mail messages may accumulate in the  the inbound, outbound, or delivery queues
    • The inbound, outbound, and delivery MTA's of the Symantec product are running
    • When using a telnet client to connect from the computer where SMTP5 is installed to port 25 of the downstream server, the response from the downstream mail server shows:
      220 **** *********

Conditions

A Cisco PIX or ASA firewall is deployed between the downstream server and the computer where Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 5 is installed.

Cause

The Cisco firewall alters the transmission between the two machines with asterisks, masking the hostname and other data with asterisks. When this masking alters SMTP commands, the downstream mail server receiving the SMTP commands cannot interpret them and becomes unresponsive. As a result, the email will not be relayed correctly

Solution

Disable Mail Guard or SMTP protocol fix-up on the firewall between Symantec product and the downstream server and/or the internet, depending upon where the blockage occurs.

For detailed steps, please consult your firewall manufacturer.
