You want to know how to successfully upgrade to Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) 6.0.x

Solution

For information about Symantec Mail Security 6.5 for Microsoft Exchange, read About upgrading to Symantec Mail Security 6.5 for Microsoft Exchange from a previous version.

Before you upgrade make sure your server meets the system requirements. For details read ‘System requirements for Symantec Information Foundation Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server/Server 2003.’

SMSMSE 6.x supports upgrades from Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 4.6.x and higher. If you have version 4.5 or earlier you must uninstall that version and then install SMSMSE 6.x.

Note regarding Microsoft Cluster configurations
If you are using a Microsoft Cluster, and have a Symantec Mail Security cluster resource, you must delete the cluster resource and uninstall Symantec Mail Security before installing a newer version or build. Instructions are listed in a separate document, linked to below:

It is recommended that you back up the existing configuration files prior to upgrading. The backup files are for use in the case of a failed migration to ensure that you can easily roll back to the previous version.

Read Backing up configuration settings for Symantec Mail Security 5.x or 6.x for Microsoft Exchange for details about backing up SMSMSE 5.x configuration files.
Read Backing up settings in Symantec Mail Security 4.x for Microsoft Exchange for details about backing up SMSMSE 4.6 configuration files.

Not all settings migrate to SMSMSE 6.x. Information about settings migration is available in the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server/Server 2003 Implementation Guide (Chapter 2, Installing Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange).
