How to obtain a DebugView log file from Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 6.x for Microsoft Exchange 2007 or 2010 transport agents

Problem
A Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) support agent has requested a DebugView log file for the Exchange 2007 or 2010 transport agents used by SMSMSE 6.x.
Solution
To obtain a DebugView log file you must perform the following actions:
- Setup DebugView
- Enable logging
- Capture the DebugView data
Setup DebugView
DebugView is a monitoring program that allows you to monitor debug output on your local computer. You can download DebugView from this Microsoft Web site, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896647.aspx. Symantec does not support or provides warranty to this program. Symantec makes no guarantee or promise of suitability or compatibility of DebugView with your computer.
- Download and install DebugView.
- Open DebugView.
- Click Options. Check Clock Time and Show Milliseconds.
- Click File. Click Log to File.
- In the Log File text box, type:
c:\dbgview.log
- Click Limit Log Size.
- In the Max Log Size (MB) text box, type the desired size for your log file.
- Click OK.
- Click Capture. Check Capture Global Win32 and Capture Win32.
Enable logging
To enable the proper logging elements, you must make some changes in your Windows registry.
- Open the Registry Editor.
- Browse to the following registry key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server
- Create a new DWORD value called CMDDebugEnabled.
- Set the value to 1.
- Browse to the following registry key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Components\SMTP
- Create a new DWORD value called TransportAgentDebugOutput
- Set the value to 1.
- Close the Registry Editor.
- Stop the following services:
- Microsoft Exchange Transport
- Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange
- Symantec Mail Security Utility
- Restart the services above.
Capture the DebugView log file
- Turn on Capture in DebugView.
- Reproduce the problem.
- Once the data has been captured in the log file, turn off Capture in DebugView.
- Submit the file in the manner requested by your agent.
- Open the Registry Editor and browse to the following registry key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server
- In the right pane, double-click the CMDDebugEnabled value.
- Set the Value data to 0.
- Browse to the following registry key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Components\SMTP
- In the right pane, double-click the TransportAgentDebugOutput value.
- Set the value data to 0.
- Restart the following services:
- Microsoft Exchange Transport
- Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange
- Symantec Mail Security Utility
