Issue

When extending a striped volume using VERITAS Volume Manager (tm) for Windows 2000 or VERITAS Storage Foundation (tm) for Windows, an error displays and the volume is not extended.

Error

Insufficient space to grow volume.

Solution

The error message shown above will display if a user attempts to extend a striped volume and there is not enough free space available to grow the volume.

To extend a striped volume with VERITAS Volume Manager for Windows 2000 or VERITAS Storage Foundation for Windows, a number of disks equal to the number of disks currently in the stripe are required. (i.e. a 3 column stripe will require 3 additional disks.) These can be the same disks (if sufficient space is available) or 3 other disks in the same dynamic disk group.  The number of columns remains unchanged after the volume is extended.

To extend a striped volume, follow these instructions:
Note: The procedure outlined below is for Volume Manager 3.1. These steps also apply to earlier versions of Volume Manager and Storage Foundation 4.x for Windows. The verbiage and screen shots may differ slightly.

1. Right click on the striped volume that you wish to extend and select Resize Volume as shown in Figure 1

Figure 1 - Volume Selection

2. Enter the amount by which the volume should be extended, or click "Max Size" to extend by the maximum amount available. Then click either "Auto assign destination disks" to allow Volume Manager to automatically assign the disks, or click "Manually assign destination disks" and select the disks upon which to extend the volume (Figure 2).

3. Click OK when the appropriate choices have been made.  Volume Manager will extend the striped volume by the amount of space specified.

Note: If there is an insufficient number of disks and/or space, then the operation will fail with the error message "Insufficient space to grow volume." Ensure that there is enough space on the same number of disks that are currently in the striped volume. A good rule of thumb is N disks in a stripe requires N disks with available space to support the extension, where N is the number of disks in the stripe set.
