Issue

You need to collect network trace information for the network packets passing through the IMLogRelayService from the IM Manager server to troubleshoot an issue.

Symptoms
For the AIM 6.X and higher IM client this is the only mechanism by which a network trace of the packets can be taken. These traffic for these IM clients is encrypted using SSL.

Solution

    1. Open the file [Installation directory]\Symantec\IMManager\IMLinkage\config\IMlinkage.xml file.
      For Windows 2000/2003 servers
      the default location is C:\Program Files\Symantec\IMManager\IMLinkage\config.
      For Windows 2008 servers the default location is
      C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\IMManager\IMLinkage\config.
    2. Find the following tags in the XML file:

      <flushToFile>
                  <!-- When enabled, each packet entry will be logged to disk. -->
                  <enabled>no</enabled>

                  <!-- Prefix name used when buffers are flushed to file. -->
                  <fileName>C:\IMLinkage</fileName>

                  <!-- The number of files to keep, before they roll over. -->
                  <numFilesToSave>10</numFilesToSave>

                  <!-- The maximum file size (MB) when flushing directly to disk. -->
                  <maximumFileSize>25</maximumFileSize>
              </flushToFile>
          </service>

    3. Change the value of the XML tab <enabled> to yes.

      The following is an example:

      <flushToFile>
                  <!-- When enabled, each packet entry will be logged to disk. -->
                  <enabled>yes</enabled>

                  <!-- Prefix name used when buffers are flushed to file. -->
                  <fileName>C:\IMLinkage</fileName>

                  <!-- The number of files to keep, before they roll over. -->
                  <numFilesToSave>10</numFilesToSave>

                  <!-- The maximum file size (MB) when flushing directly to disk. -->
                  <maximumFileSize>25</maximumFileSize>
              </flushToFile>
          </service>

    4. Save the file.
    5. Restart the IMLogRelayService service. NOTE: This causes all IM clients to disconnect.

    Additional Information:
    • All the network trace data will be stored in files startng with IMLinkage.pcap and numbered 1-10 like all other IM Manager logs.
    • The trace files are stored by defualt on the root of the C:\ drive.
    • If you need to update the location or name of the trace files you can update the node in the IMLinkage.xml and restart the IMLogRelayService. NOTE: This causes all IM clients to disconnect.
      For example:
      <fileName>C:\IMM\IMTraces
      This node would store the network trace files in the location C:\IMM\. The files would start with IMTraces.pcap and would be numbered 1 to 10.
