Issue

You wish to do one of the following:

  • Backup/restore configuration settings for a single computer running SSE.
  • Copy the configuration from a computer running SSE to a different computer running SSE.

Solution

NOTE: SSE configuration files are version specific. Restoring SSE configuration files of the wrong version cause the SSE service or daemon to fail to start.

How to backup the SSE/SPE configuration:

  1. Stop the Scan Engine service or daemon.
  2. Copy the configuration files to a different location on your file system.
  3. Start the Scan Engine service or daemon.

How to restore the SSE/SPE configuration:

  1. Stop the Scan Engine service or daemon.
  2. Copy the backup configuration files from an alternate location on your file system to the Scan Engine folder over-writing the existing configuration files.
  3. Start the Scan Engine service or daemon.

How to copy the SSE/SPE configuration to a different computer:

1. Stop the Scan Engine service or daemon.
2. Copy the backup configuration files from an alternate location on your file system to the Scan Engine folder over-writing the existing configuration files.
3. Open the file configuration.xml in an editor and change the following item to contain the new computer's IP address (there may be more than one line with this value):

<BindAddressvalue="10.85.209.155" />

4. Save the file and close the editor.
5. Start the Scan Engine service or daemon.

Configuration Files for SSE

• The configuration for SSE is contained in the following files:

atomicfiltering.xml
category3.xml
configuration.xml
filtering.xml
liveupdate.xml
policy.xml

The location of the file is in the following directory (default location):

Windows 32-bit operating system: c:\Program Files\Symantec\Scan Engine
Windows 64-bit operating system: c:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Scan Engine
Linux/Solaris: /opt/Symantec/SYMCScan/bin

• If the liveupdate.conf file has been modified to include settings such as proxy server values, you will need to include the liveupdate.conf in your backup.

The location of the file is in the following directory (default location) for Scan Engine 5.2.8 and earlier:

Windows 32-bit operating system: c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Java Liveupdate
Windows 64-bit operating system: c:\Programdata\Symantec\Javaliveupdate
Linux/Solaris:  /opt/Symantec/liveupdt or /etc

The location of the file for Scan Engine 5.2.10 and Protection Engine 7.x is the SSE/SPE installation folder.

Windows 32-bit default location: C:\Program Files\Symantec\Scan Engine
Windows 64-bit default location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Scan Engine
