Issue

You are using Microsoft Cluster for your Exchange server environment, and need the correct procedure for upgrading your existing version of Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE).

Solution

Note: If you are NOT using a Symantec Mail Security cluster resource, follow the instructions in How to upgrade to Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 6.0.x.

Before you upgrade make sure your server meets the system requirements. For details, read System requirements for Symantec Mail Security 6 for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server/Server 2003.

To go from your current version of Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange to a newer version, when you are using a Symantec Mail Security cluster resource, follow the instructions below.

It is recommended that you back up the existing configuration files before upgrading. The backup files are for use in the case of a failed migration to ensure that you can easily roll back to the previous version.

Read Backing up configuration settings for Symantec Mail Security 5.x or 6.x for Microsoft Exchange for details about backing up SMSMSE 5.x configuration files.
Read Backing up settings in Symantec Mail Security 4.x for Microsoft Exchange for details about backing up SMSMSE 4.6 configuration files.

  1. Back up your settings in Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange.
  2. From the Cluster Administrator utility, bring the Symantec Mail Security cluster resource offline and delete it.
  3. Uninstall Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange from all nodes. Answer 'Yes' to delete the cluster resource .DLL during the first uninstall.
  4. On the Active Node, browse to the shared storage used by SMSMSE. This shared storage was assigned to the Symantec Mail Security cluster resource.
  5. Delete the directory called SMSMSE.
  6. Install the new version of Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange to all Exchange nodes.
  7. Install the license file for Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange to all Exchange nodes, as per the recommended procedure. Read Installing Symantec Information Foundation Mail Security 6.x for Microsoft Exchange on an Exchange 2000 Server or an Exchange Server 2003 Cluster

The settings you save previously only work for the same version they came from. Therefore, you can only restore Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 5.x settings to Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange5.x, and Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 6.x settings to Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 6.x.
