Issue



The Celerra Antiv-Virus Agent will not start. In the Application Log of the Windows Event Viewer appears an error containing the message "Honor read only flag is set to true."

Symptoms

  • The following event appears in the Application Log of Windows Event Viewer:
    Eventid: 144
    Source: EMC CAVA
    Type: Error
    Description: The service encountered an error during initialization. Honor read only flag is set to true. Symantec SAV SE DLL will not delete infected read-only files.

 


Cause



Symantec Scan Engine is configured to honor the read only flag by default.


Solution




To set the honor read only flag to false within Symantec Scan Engine 5.x and 7.0

  1. At the command line, navigate to the installation location of Scan Engine.
  2. At the command line, type the following command:
    java -jar xmlmodifier.jar -s /policies/Misc/HonorReadOnly/@value false policy.xml
  3. Restart the Symantec Scan Engine service to make the change effective.



To set the honor read only flag to false within Symantec Protection Engine 7.5.x

  1. At the command line, navigate to the installation location of Symantec Protection Engine "Scan Engine"
  2. At the command line, type the following command: 
    xmlmodifier.exe -s /policies/Misc/HonorReadOnly/@value false policy.xml
  3. Restart the Symantec Protection Engine service to make the change effective.
