How to update virus definitions in Symantec Scan Engine 5.x without using LiveUpdate.

Symptoms
There is a need to update virus definitions in Scan Engine on a system that does not have internet access.

Solution

Following are the steps that need to be followed for updating AV defs via an Intelligent Updater file.

  • Please make sure ScanEngine service is in "running" state
  • Execute the script "setup-iu"
  • Run the Intelligent Updater file

To execute the setup-iu script on Linux or Solaris

  • At the bash prompt, type:
    <INSTALL_DIR>/bin/definitions/AntiVirus/setup-iu.sh enable

....where <INSTALL_DIR> is the installation location of the Scan Engine folder.

To execute the setup-iu script on Windows

  • At the command prompt, type:
    <INSTALL_DIR>\Definitions\AntiVirus\setup-iu.bat enable

....where <INSTALL_DIR> is the installation location of the Scan Engine folder.

Run the Intelligent Updater file on Windows

  1. In a browser, navigate to ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/antivirus_definitions/norton_antivirus
  2. If Scan Engine does not reside on a machine with Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition (SAVCE) or Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP), download and execute the file that ends in -x86.exe

(You do not need to manually restart the SE service. )

Run the Intelligent Updater file on Linux or Solaris

  1. In a browser, navigate to ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/antivirus_definitions/norton_antivirus
  2. Download the file that ends in -unix.sh.

Note: Do not download the "-unix64.sh" because the Scan Engine is a 32 bit App.

  3. Use chmod to change permissions for the downloaded file to 755
  4. At the CLI, type:
    ./<filename>

    ...where <filename>
is the name of the file you downloaded.

( You will want to restart the Scan Engine service. )

Technical Information
For setup-iu.bat for Windows or setup-iu.sh for Linux/Solaris there are only two options for the command line:

Windows box:

      setup-iu enable

or

      setup-iu disable

Linux/Solaris

./setup-iu.sh enable

or

./setup-iu.sh disable

If setup-iu.bat is enabled, a file is created with the name “setup.iu” containing the line
Enabled

The default path is : C:\Program Files\Symantec\Scan Engine\Definitions\Antivirus\

If Setup-iu.bat is disabled, there is no file with the name “setup.iu”

The default path for Linux/Solaris is: /opt/SYMCScan/bin/definitions/AntiVirus
