How to download and use the Intelligent Updater (IU) for Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE).


The Intelligent Updater is an executable file that can be used to manually update virus definitions for SMSMSE. 

1. Download the latest Intelligent Updater from here:

NOTE:  If FTP access is not available then download the Intelligent Updater from here:  Choose the version for Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (32-bit) and save it to the SMSMSE computer.

2. Run the intelligent updater.

Windows 2003 32-bit Operating system

Double click symcdefsi32.exe.

Windows 2003 64-bit operating system

a. Open a command prompt and CD to the directory where the EXE is downloaded.
b. Run the following command:

symcdefsi32.exe /extract "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SymcData\virusdefs32\incoming"

Windows 2008 64-bit operating system

a. Open a command prompt and CD to the directory where the EXE is downloaded.
b. Run the following command:

symcdefsi32.exe /extract "C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Definitions\SymcData\virusdefs32\incoming"

3. SMSMSE reports the following event to the Windows Application Event log when the new definitions are used:

Using Windows Task Manager to automate the download

If it is necessary to download and apply the Intelligent Updater on an ongoing basis a Windows batch script can be used to download the Intelligent Updater and then apply it to the SMSMSE computer.  The contains example scripts for each operating system that do the following: 1) download the Intelligent Updater and 2)  apply the Intelligent Updater to the system to get new definitions.  

1. Download and unzip the file attached to this article.
2. Use the appropriate script for the operating system:

Windows 2003 32-bit: GetDefs-2003-32bit.bat
Windows 2003 64-bit: GetDefs-2003-64bit.bat
Windows 2008 64-bit: GetDefs-2008-64bit.bat


 3. Use Windows Task Scheduler to run the script periodically.

Windows 2003

    a. Open the "Add Scheduled Task" wizard (Start -> Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks -> Add Scheduled Task).
    b. Click Next and then click Browse....
    c. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE and select the appropriate batch script (see above) and click Open.
    d. Give the task a descriptive name and select how often to perform the task (Daily is the most common choice).
    e. Choose a time, specify "Every day" and leave the Start date as default and click Next.
    f. Enter the credentials for a local administrator on the Exchange server, and click Next.
    g. Click Finish.


Windows 2008

1. Click Start > Administrative Tools > Task Scheduler.
2. In the right panel click Create Basic Task.
3. In the Create a Basic Task dialog box give the task a name. Description is optional. Click Next.
4. In the Task Trigger dialog box select Daily. Click Next.
5. In the Daily dialog box change the time to an appropriate time.  Click Next.
6. In the Action dialog box select Start a program. Click Next.
7. In the Start a Program dialog box click Browse. Select the appropriate script (see above). Click Next.
8. In the Summary dialog click the Open the Properties dialog for this task when I click Finish checkbox.  Click the Finish button.
9. Ensure that the user account specified has appropriate permissions to run the task.  If not click the Change User or Group... button to change the account. Click the OK button when finished.


 NOTE:  If it is necessary to separate the downloading of the Intelligent Updater from running the EXE set up separate batch scripts on separate machines if necessary that only do the download or the update.
