SMS for Domino requires at least two and optionally three license 'types':

 • Product
 • Content
 • Premium AntiSpam

These licenses are generated by registering your Serial number in the licensing portal, https://licensing.symantec.com
This Serial number typically starts with a B or M, followed by 10 numbers, e.g. M0123456789.

The Product license is generated with a Serial number that is acquired the first time the product is purchased.
The Product license has no expiration date (the expiration date shows up as NONE in e.g. the SAVLOG.NSF), and can therefore always be used.
There is no need to renew it, as long as you leave the original license installed on the system.
Without the Product license SMS Domino will not work.
The Product license will show up in the license file as

The Content license is a license type that needs to be renewed from time to time.
Each time the Maintenance contract is renewed you receive a new Serial number.
Registering this new Serial number in the licensing portal, https://licensing.symantec.com will generate a new license file that contains the new Content license.
The Content license has an expiration date, which will show in the SAVLOG.NSF
(If you run "tell sav quit" followed by "load ntask", SMS Domino will be reloaded and you can see events in SAVLOG.NSF that tell you which license was loaded and the expiration date)
Without the Content license, SMS Domino will not download new AntiVirus definitions.
The Content license part may look like

NOTE: For a properly working SMS Domino you need both a Product and a Content license.

Optionally there is the Premium AntiSpam (PAS) license which is an additional license that can be purchased on top of the Product and Content licenses.
The license allows you to enable Premium AntiSpam, download AntiSpam rulesets and block spams.
In the license file it might show up as:
