Issue

You are using Windows IIS (Internet Information Services) and LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x (LUA 2.x) or LiveUpdate Adminstration Utility 1.x (LUAU 1.x) to administer an internal server for updating Symantec products on your Macintoshes (Symantec Endpoint Protection or Symantec AntiVirus). When Macintosh LiveUpdate connects to your internal server, it fails to retrieve updates.

Cause

Windows IIS serves only files with extensions registered in the MIME types list; if you are using IIS to serve content updates, be sure to register all extensions that are present in the updates folder. In the example liveupt.log above, the "osi" extensions need to be registered with the IIS MIME types list.

Solution

On the server hosting the LiveUpdate content:

  1. Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand Web Sites.
  3. Right-click on the site or virtual directory for LiveUpdate downloads and choose Properties.
  4. Select the HTTP Headers tab and click the "MIME Types..." button.
  5. Add all extensions that are present in the LUA/LUAU downloads folder.
    Or, rather than adding several individual extensions, add one: extension "*" (asterisk) with MIME type "application/octet-stream"
  6. Click OK to close all open dialog boxes and close the IIS Manager.

If several servers in the organization are acting as LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x Distribution Centers (DC's), be sure to perform the necessary change on each of them.
