IM Manager Service IMLogRelayService Starts Up But Does not Listen on IM Ports: "Listen failure on ip"

Immediately after startup for the IM Manager Service IMLogRelayService the Windows Application Event log shows error messages like the following:



Listen failure on ip 10.85.209.85 (resolved to 10.85.209.85) and port 9091 for Inter Relay Connection Port. Possible cause is incorrect ip and port settings or the port could already be in use. Error code: 0x80004005.



IM clients cannot log in.


Symptoms
The Windows Application Event log shows the following sequence of messages from the IMLogRelayService:

 

    Information 101 2/4/2009 14:37 IMLogRelayService SERVER01 None DOMAIN\svc_im The IMLogRelayService service has started. The current mode is Single.
    Information 136 2/4/2009 14:37 IMLogRelayService SERVER01 None DOMAIN\svc_im The license in use has a seat limit of 11000..
    Error 4614 2/4/2009 14:37 IMLinkage SERVER01 None DOMAIN\svc_im Listen failure on ip 10.85.209.15 (resolved to 10.85.209.15) and port 80 for Yahoo server endpoint RV port. Possible cause is incorrect ip and port settings or the port could already be in use. Error code: 0x80004005.
    Error 4614 2/4/2009 14:37 IMLinkage SERVER01 None DOMAIN\svc_im Listen failure on ip 10.85.209.17 (resolved to 10.85.209.17) and port 5222 for Jabber server endpoint port. Possible cause is incorrect ip and port settings or the port could already be in use. Error code: 0x80004005.
    Error 4614 2/4/2009 14:37 IMLinkage SERVER01 None DOMAIN\svc_im Listen failure on ip 0.0.0.0 (resolved to 0.0.0.0) and port 5193 for AIM server endpoint file transfer port. Possible cause is incorrect ip and port settings or the port could already be in use. Error code: 0x80004005.
    Error 4614 2/4/2009 14:37 IMLinkage SERVER01 None DOMAIN\svc_im Listen failure on ip 0.0.0.0 (resolved to 0.0.0.0) and port 5292 for AIM server endpoint SSL Service port. Possible cause is incorrect ip and port settings or the port could already be in use. Error code: 0x80004005.

    Error 4614 2/4/2009 14:37 IMLinkage SERVER01 None DOMAIN\svc_im Listen failure on ip 0.0.0.0 (resolved to 0.0.0.0) and port 443 for AIM server endpoint ssl dispatch port. Possible cause is incorrect ip and port settings or the port could already be in use. Error code: 0x80004005.

    Error 4614 2/4/2009 14:37 IMLinkage SERVER01 None DOMAIN\svc_im Listen failure on ip 0.0.0.0 (resolved to 0.0.0.0) and port 5194 for AIM client endpoint file transfer port. Possible cause is incorrect ip and port settings or the port could already be in use. Error code: 0x80004005.
    Error 4614 2/4/2009 14:37 IMLinkage SERVER01 None DOMAIN\svc_im Listen failure on ip 10.85.209.17 (resolved to 10.85.209.17) and port 9091 for Inter Relay Connection Port. Possible cause is incorrect ip and port settings or the port could already be in use. Error code: 0x80004005.
    NOTE: The set of IP addresses listed in the error mesasge is dependent on the IM Manager configuration and the server configuration.


Conditions:
 

  • These messages appear after the IMLogRelayService stopped and then immediately stopped.
    A typical scenario is when the Computer Service control panel is used and the Restart command is used. This stops the service and then immediately restarts it. Another common scenario is if the IMLogRelayService stops unexpectedly. The Service properties are configured by the IM Manager installation to automatically restart the service when the service stops unexpectedly.



 


Cause



When the IMLogRelayService stops the network ports it used are released to the operating system. The operating system keeps the ports open for a short period of time. After the short period of time the network ports are released by the operating system. The IMLogRelayService is starting up immediately after stopping. Since the operating system still has the ports open the IMLogRelayService is unable to start listening on the required ports.


Solution



If the IMLogRelayService is being restarted manually then stop the service manually. Then wait for thirty (30) seconds. Then start the IMLogRelayService.

If the IMLogRelayService is restarting automatically then contact Symantec Technical Support to evaluate the service stability.
