Software Update and/or rules download may not work for a couple of hours after re-registration of a new license

Issue



When you re-register the appliance with a new valid license after letting it run for a while with the expired license, you may experience software update and rules download failures for a few hours.


Symptoms
You have registered a new valid license successfully after the appliance has been running for a while with the expired license. Software Update and/or rules download are still failing. You may see "471 inactivated key" message whey you try to perform Software Update from the Control Center or CLI.


Error



When you run Software Update in the Control Center, you get the following message:

Cannot retrieve the available software versions. Err Failed to fetch
http://localhost:8080/products/smsapp/prod/i386/base/pkglist.stable 471
inactivated key E: Some index files failed to download, they have been
ignored, or old ones used instead.

When you run "update check" command in the CLI, you get the following message:

http://localhost:8080/products/smsapp/prod/i386/base/pkglist.stable  471

Cause



This behavior is by design.


Solution



License information is cached at our backend for performance efficiency. This causes the expired license information to persist until the cache expires. After registration of a new valid license, the Software Update and rules download issue, if existed, will resolve itself when cache is refreshed with new license information. If you continue to experience this issue for more than 4 hours, please contact Symantec Technical Support.
