When using VERITAS Volume Manager (tm) for Windows and dynamic disk groups, attempts to reactivate a missing disk will fail under certain conditions.

Error



Attribute or key is not found for the object.

Solution



This TechNote focuses on the Reactivate function within Volume Manager. See the Related Documents section of this TechNote for information on how to use the Remove function.

A dynamic disk group is created using three disks. Disk View is selected within Volume Manager (Figure 1).

At this point, one of the three dynamic disks is physically removed and a rescan is performed. When the rescan has completed, Disk View will show an entry for a missing disk (Figure 2).

An attempt is made to reactivate the missing disk using these steps:

1. Right-click on the missing disk
2. Select Reactivate Disk
3. In the Reactivate Disks box, select Missing Disk
4. Click OK

A Volume Manager Alert Message will be displayed detailing the source of the error (VxSvc_vmnt), date, time, and a description, i.e. Failed to reactivate disk Missing Disk. An error message will also display stating that an attribute or key is not found for the object (Figure 3).

The reactivate disk command executes a manual restart on a disk. This assumes the disk is present. In this scenario, the disk has been physically removed and logically can not be reactivated. To successfully reactivate this dynamic disk, return the drive to its location and click "Rescan".
