Environment

Issue

You're using Symantec Scan Engine 5.x with a Netapp Filer via RPC. After you've configured both Scan Engine and the Filer as recommended by Symantec, you notice that the Filer logs (by default every 20 seconds) the following message:

CIFS: Virus scanner x.x.x.x attempted to register but had insufficient privilege."

Error

NetApp Filer shows error "CIFS: Virus scanner x.x.x.x attempted to register but had insufficient privilege."

Cause

Symantec Scan Engine does not belong to the same domain as the Netapp Filer, or the domain account that Scan Engine is running under is not a member of the backup operators group on the NetApp Filer.

Solution

The Symantec Scan Engine service needs to run as a domain account that is a local admin on the Server it is installed on, and this account must also be a member of the backup operators group on the NetApp Filer.
