You log on to the Symantec Protection Center console. After some time, it logs off automatically as a security measure. When you try to log on again, the logon fails, and you see the message, "Unexpected server error."

This can happen if the hard disk drive is full or nearly full, which causes the database service to stop. To work around this problem, free at least 100 MB of space on the hard drive, then start the database service manually before you log on again.

To start the database service
  1. Click Start > Run, type smc.exe, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the Symantec Embedded Database service, and click Start.
  3. When the service indicates that it is started, log on to the console.
