Issue

Failed to start the Symantec Management Client Service. Error code returned: 0x8007042c

Symptoms
After installing Symantec Endpoint Protection, the Shield icon doesn't appear in the System Tray. Opening the interface generates the following message, "It appears that the Symantec Management Client service is not running. You will not be able to manage network protection settings through the main user interface until it is running. Do you want to start the service now?". When clicking Yes, the following error is generated, "Failed to start the Symantec Management Client Service. Error code returned: 0x8007042c".

Cause

With RU5, the Symantec Management Client service has a dependency on the System Event Notification service. If this service is not running, the Symantec Management Client service will not start.

Solution

Click on Start > Run and type Services.msc
  1. Right-click on the System Event Notification service and click on Properties.
  2. Under the General tab, verify that the startup type is set to automatic and start the service.
  3. Click OK and start the Symantec Management Client service.
